Opinicon Recap – 2019

Bringing all three offices together isn’t something we get to do nearly as much as we’d like so we always cherish the moments that we do. Our yearly retreat at The Opinicon is one of the two times throughout the year this happens. The week leading into the retreat is full of excitement.

After arriving, we had our usual team lunch out on the grass before heading our separate ways to the pool or out onto the lake. With paddles and beers in hand, a small group of us ventured across the lake to “Snake Island”. Thankfully, we didn’t see any snakes.

A first for us this year at the retreat was a Fireside Side Chat with Tobias Lütke, the CEO of Shopify. As many know, Shopify’s 150 Elgin office was the first commercial project Linebox ever undertook so this was especially insightful for us to sit down and chat with Tobi about our early relationship and what the future holds for Shopify and Linebox. Tobi imparted some wisdom on us. He challenged us to keep pushing new ideas and continually test new approaches in every design that we develop, not only for Shopify but for all of our projects.

After the hour-long chat, it was time for dinner and the annual Opinicon Presentation! A recap of the events of the year, this presentation is a great time for all of us to get out of the weeds and look at the bigger picture of everything happening in the company. This year we’ve finished construction on over 300,000 sq.ft. of space over 8 projects.

The next day, it was time for crits and markups of all our current projects. From new offices, restaurants, and residential developments, the markup is a great way to dip your toes and contribute to projects that you aren’t personally involved with. We’ve got A LOT of new and exciting stuff on the horizon.

We cap off the Friday with our final team lunch of the retreat before getting ready for the ride home. It’s been a great year for Linebox with new projects and amazing clients. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us in 2020! And as always, thanks Opinicon!
