THE STORY
This modern rural home is located outside Ottawa on a fully tree flat rural lot. The two long linear “bar like forms” are design and oriented to take full advantage of views to the northern forest and promote winter heat gains and summer shading. The design allows for winter solar gains by maximizing the amount of glazing to be exposed during the winter months, using concrete floors that will act as heat sinks and sloping the roof to allow the sun to penetrate deep into the spaces. The design also incorporates cross ventilation, sun shading devices and cool concrete floors during the summer months to promote summer cooling. The orientation and large window walls provide panoramic distant views of the forest.
