THE STORY
This modern rural home is located outside Ottawa on a fully treed rural lot. The two long linear “bar like forms” are designed and oriented to take full advantage of the views to the northern forest, promoting winter solar heat gains and also providing summer shading devices to reduce heats gains. The design allows for winter solar gains by maximizing the amount of glazing to be exposed during the winter months, using concrete floors that will act as heat sinks and sloping the roof to allow the sun to penetrate deep into the spaces. The design also incorporates cross ventilation, sun shading devices and cool concrete floors during the summer months to promote summer cooling.
