“I wanted to re-create the large open spaces, industrial feel and raw materials of my loft in a home that was not in a building” – Client
The Story
We are the Toronto Architect on record that was callanged to desing a small 680s.f. infill to fit onto a 14′x’70 this small modern “Mini House” located in Toronto, Ontario was built as an alternative to “loft living”. The client wanted to recreate an industrial, loft-like environment but without the confines inherent in a condominium building. Working with a budget that would not exceed the cost of a condo.
This project focused on the concept of compact living in downtown lofts. We did this through the use of 17ft ceilings, creating a sense of spaciousness even with a compact floor dimensions. Other design aspects used include thoughtfully placed openings to take advantage of good views while shielding from bad view lines, created sculptural shadows on the interior walls / floors and promotes solar heat gains in the winter and proper ventilation in the summer months. We used reclaimed materials form stage sets and other recycled demolished buildings to enhance the raw industrial feel while also keep the budget low.
We have created a Blog dedicated to this project. This blog will discuss everything that is involved to design, build and complete a custom modern home. We plan to post the major highlights, phases, challenges and make notes as the project develops in order to educate anyone that is interested in building their own home and or just curious about the process
