The Story

Within the Rockcliffe Park neighbourhood, the large park next to the Rockcliffe Park Public School is very well known. All through the week, any season of the year, this green space is used intensely by the community. The community group “Rockcliffe Hosers”, who organize community events and maintain the skating rink during the winter months, decided it was time this park needed a proper field house.

First, we positioned the field house as a central hub between the four important elements present on site :

  • The Rockcliffe Park Public School
  • The soccer field
  • Jubilee Garden
  • The skating rink

By doing so, the field house is visible at all times, from all corners of the site and from the surrounding roads and buildings.

Next, we designed a very small building with a very big roof, so it acts more like a pavilion in a park. The oversized canopy is an open invitation for everybody to gather, find shelter on hot and cold days, interact and play.

Lit up at night, the pavilion acts as a big lantern. The slight angle of the canopy cladded in bright cedar reflects a warm glow in all directions, as the pavilion governs over the different evening activities taking place.
